All-new for 2019, the 1200cc Triumph Speed Twin reintroduces a legendary name back into motorcycling, looking to set a new category benchmark for how a custom roadster should ride and feel. Packed with the latest technology, the Speed Twin features a dedicated chassis and suspension setup, with a low seat height for both the rider and pillion.
The original 1938 Triumph Speed Twin was considered by many to have the world’s first successful parallel twin engine slotted into a great chassis. Its performance and handling prowess put it among the top echelon of ‘riders’ motorcycles for its time. Now, 80 years later, Triumph seek to reclaim the position of best ‘riders bike’ with the new model, by extracting 96 hp and 112 Nm from the 1200cc parallel twin shoehorned into the new chassis, alongside new 41mm cartridge forks and twin rear shocks to keep the power in contact with the ground.
The brand new Speed Twin still retains all of the contemporary styling of the smaller Street Twin, but features even more premium details. 10kg lighter than the Triumph Thruxton, at 196kg (dry), the Speed Twin is fitted with LED head and tail lights, switchable traction control, as well as Sport, Road, and Rain riding modes. The Torque-assist clutch is designed to lighten the clutch lever feel, improving ride quality.
The dedicated new tubular frame has been developed from the Triumph Thruxton R to deliver a comfortable riding position, allowing the rider to feel engaged in the bike’s abilities, without sacrificing any of the ergonomics between the controls, seat, and footpegs. High specification Brembo 4-piston brake calipers capture twin 305mm front discs, while at the rear a Nissin 2-piston caliper floats above a 220mm disc. ABS is fitted as standard, as is becoming the norm on new model bikes now.
The stylish new twin clocks incorporate a selection of features, which can be accessed via a handlebar-mounted scroll button. Selecting different rider modes, or traction control settings, the rider can change how the bike will behave quickly and easily, as they see fit for the conditions and various road surfaces. The clocks also display a gear-position indicator and an estimated fuel range, with average and current fuel consumption calculations available for display. When fitted with an accessory Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, or Heated Grips, the clocks can also display their readings for extra rider confidence when moving.
Triumph continues to allow customers to accessorise their bikes, and the Speed Twin has a catalog of over 80 individual accessories to help riders add more style, practicality, and security. From brushed Vance & Hines exhaust silencers, blacked out detailing, stylish and durable luggage options, and quilted seats, to Triumph-engineered security additions such as disc locks, ground anchors, and locking chains, your Speed Twin will undoubtedly be one of a kind.
