Think it’s only producers of Italian exotica who make limited editions? When BRM called into NZ CFMoto importer Forbes & Davies recently, we bumped straight into a rather sexy and limited edition 450SR-S, and it shows just how far the Chinese motorcycle industry has come (although this was pretty evident after our tour of the factory last year). Who would have thought a Chinese brand could have the sort of interest from buyers even 5 years ago that would see a limited run snapped up. But that’s just what’s happened with the 450SR-S.

Designed to celebrate David Alonso’s historic 2024 Moto3 season that saw him surpass Valentino Rossi’s 1997 record for the most wins in a season in the third class (Alonso scored 14 wins to Rossi’s 11), CFMoto also scooped the team and manufacturer titles.

The bike is based on the current 450SR-S which has already proven to be a hit with Kiwi motorcyclists thanks to the sporty styling, top tech and LAMS-approved 46hp. Featuring a 449cc parallel twin that uses a 270º crank to produce more character and a punchy bottom-end, max output is at 9,250rpm with a max torque figure of 39.3Nm coming in at 7,750rpm. And there’s almost as much tech on the small capacity sporty as you’d find on the limited edition models from certain Italian brands, with new BOSCH traction control and ABS systems on the new model along with a quickshifter and tyre pressure monitoring system all standard.

Suspension is taken care of by a set of 37mm separate-function forks (an upgrade from the standard 450SR) offering compression and rebound damping adjustment, while the rear monoshock gets preload adjustment only but is attached to a sexy single-sided swingarm. A Brembo M.40 four-piston radially mounted caliper grips a 320mm disc which should provide more than enough performance to slow a bike that tips the scales at 179kg (wet).

And while the ‘standard’ 450SR-S looks stunning with its sporty bodywork complete with aerodynamic winglets, the Aspar version takes it all to the next level, with the blue colour set off by the carbon and stickers. Turn the ignition on, and not only do the LED lights dance up the front, but the 5-inch TFT dash has a special start sequence that shows the titles the Moto3 team have achieved. And when you get your Aspar 450SR-S (if you can get one), not only does it have a number on the headstock but you also get a box of special bits to further enhance your ride. Inside you’ll find some rather sexy rearsets, a tail tidy and a double-bubble screen, all of which have been fitted to the bike in Forbes and Davies showroom.

We’re yet to ride the 450SR-S here at BRM, but all reports are that it’s an incredibly fun and entertaining machine which transports the rider back to the days when you needed to work with a machine to make fast progress, rather than simply twisting the throttle and relying on masses of horsepower. The 450SR-S is what you’d class as a “rider’s bike” and that always comes with loads of fun and big smiles.

If you’re keen on the limited edition version, apparently, there are a couple left in NZ CFMoto dealers that are yet to be snapped up. But at $10,990 + ORC (the standard is $9,990 + ORC), it has to be the most affordable limited edition model you’re ever likely to find.
