Aprilia RSV1000 to be reincarnated?

  • Aprilia RSV1000 trademark filed
  • Indication of a new launch
  • Could make its debut at WSBK

Aprilia has filed a trademark for the RSV1000 name in the USA. The motorcycle was the Italian brand’s V-twin powered superbike that was taken off the shelves over a decade ago to be replaced by the RSV4.

The move from Aprilia is less than surprising as we see other manufacturers move to twin-cylinder motorcycles. These are cost effective to manufacture and comply with the stringent emission norms while pushing out decent performance. One such example is the Yamaha R9 that replaced the R1 in major markets. The other is the Ducati Panigale V2- a more affordable and accessible version of the Panigale V4.

Here is where the RSV1000 will come in to fill in the gap between the Aprilia RS660 and the RSV4 in terms of price and performance too. While developing an all-new V-twin could be a challenge, Aprilia is likely to use the 996cc engine that is in development for the Shiver-based Cycline SR1000 by Zonshen, Aprilia’s parent company Piaggio’s Chinese partner.

Now the patent filing isn’t a guarantee for a new litre-class V-twin from Aprilia. However, with the reasons we laid out, there is still a high chance and indication of a motorcycle in the works. While it could appear at the EICMA show later this year, it could also make its debut at the WSBK.
