New BMW R1300GS adventure motorcycle recalled globally

  • BMW issues global recall for R1300GS
  • Close to 25,000 units affected
  • Concerns with starter relay

This recall comes due to concerns with the R1300GS’ starter relay housing, which could be faulty. Around 25,000 bikes sold globally are said to be affected. So, what’s with the relay housing, you ask? Now, a bike’s starter relay is responsible for increasing the battery’s current to power the starter motor and then, the engine.

The unit on the BMW R 1300GS is said to have a manufacturing defect which could cause the relay to overheat. And this could result in a failed start or even a fire hazard, at worst. On the BMW R1300GS, the relay is accessible and is situated below the seat on the left side. It reduces the need to disassemble many body panels. It is a quick fix, but a faulty relay is still a high risk.

While BMW Motorrad hasn’t issued an official announcement for the recall in New Zealand and Australia, we recommend visiting your nearest dealership and having the relay on your R1300GS checked out. However, for customers still awaiting deliveries, we expect the manufacturer to have this sorted before making its way to the dealership.
