Frost on the charge…
With just the double-header weekend at Hampton Downs left to run, Suzuki GSX-R1000 rider, Frost, has built up a handy lead in the Superbike class.
The final South Island round was held at Timaru’s Levels International Raceway and after securing the bonuc point for pole position, the Suzuki Series winner was never headed. With a serious crash on the Saturday, all classes raced two instead of the forecast three races.
Frost’s main opposition came in the form of fellow Suzuki rider, John Ross, who scored a pair of second places for his efforts to sit second in the series. Third and fourth were hard-fought with Tony Rees breaking the Suzuki stranglehold on his Honda CBR1000RR in the first race before Scott Moir made it a 1-2-3 for Suzuki in the second race. Andrew Stroud continues to improve after a two-year hiatus and was rewarded with a pair of fourths.
In the super-competitive Supersport 600 class, Cameron Hudson and Shane Richardson shared the wins, giving Hudson an extended 37.5-point lead over Daniel Mettam.
Dennis Chartlett dominated the lightweight class, as well as taking both Protwin races as he enjoys semi-retirement and enjoys the smaller machines and the close racing.
Jacob Stroud scored two wins in the Superlites, although not the way he would have liked. Shaun Harris, who still retains the lead by a point, crashed out and was seriously injured. Stroud dedicated his wins to ‘the Legend’ Harris.
Sidecar action saw Colin Buckley and Robbie Shorter take the double, giving them a 64-point margin with only 100 left on offer for the season.
The series now takes a break until March 4-6 at Hampton Downs. This is the last round and the only one in the North Island, so maybe the challenge is to try and match the crowds seen at the southern legs…
