Renowned motorcycle journalist, racer and BRM contributor Alan Cathcart has released his latest work, Ducati 748 On Road and Track, published by Italian specialists FBA Moto Italiane. This new hardcover volume dives deep into the history, development, and performance of one of Ducati’s most iconic middleweight sportbikes—the Ducati 748.
Covering both the road-going and competition versions of the 748, this book explores the model’s life from its launch in 1996 through to 2002, when it was eventually succeeded by the Testastretta-powered 749. The book blends historical insight with first-hand riding impressions, offering readers an authentic perspective on how these machines performed both on the street and the racetrack.

Cathcart draws on his unique experience, having tested not just the 748SP and 748R on the road, but also a range of factory and privateer race bikes that competed in the World Supersport Championship. These include machines ridden by racing legends like Fabrizio Pirovano, Stéphane Chambon, Paolo Casoli, and Piergiorgio Bontempi. The book is packed with detailed track test reports and behind-the-scenes insights into the tuning secrets that turned the 748 into a competitive force.
Photographic content is a major highlight, with large-format images showcasing the bikes in action and stripped of their bodywork—revealing rarely seen technical details that Ducati fans and collectors will appreciate.

Published in both English and Italian, Ducati 748 On Road and Track is available exclusively via mail order from FBA Moto Italiane. It’s a limited edition of 748 copies (naturally), presented in a 30 x 23 cm hardcover format with 144 glossy pages and 74 full-page images. The retail price is €40.00, plus worldwide shipping.
This book follows Cathcart’s well-received previous volumes with FBA Moto Italiane, including titles on Ducati V-twin Superbikes, the original Ducati Monster, Moto Guzzi factory racers, and the Dr. John Guzzis—with more in the pipeline for 2025.
